Stephen Smart on Ray Mead

Barbara Edwards Contemporary Calgary, is pleased to invite you to an upcoming BEC lecture featuring guest curator Stephen Smart discussing the later works of painter Ray Mead (1921-98). Mead was a celebrated member of the Painters 11, a group that gained prominence during the height of 1950s abstraction. Mead's work came to prominence on the national scene in the 50s and 60s, however as Smart contends, the works of his last two decades are a testament to a growing maturity in the artist's work.

While a partner at Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt, Stephen Smart amassed and curated one of the finest corporate collections in Canada. In addition to curating, he has served as director on the advisory board for art institutions such as Visual Arts Ontario, Gershon Iskowitz Foundation, Museum of Canadian Contemporary Art and the Doris McCarthy Gallery. He also served as a member of the acquisition committee for the Art Gallery of Ontario.

Also in attendance will be Mead's widow, Carolynn Lund-Mead, who will be able to offer further insight into his painting practice.
