STEPHEN SMART ON RAY MEAD
SATURDAY, JUNE 18th @ 2pm
Barbara Edwards Contemporary is pleased to present exhibition curator Stephen Smart
discussing the later works of painter Ray Mead (1921 – 98). A member of the Painters 11,
Mead’s work came to prominence on the national scene in the 50s and 60s, however as
Smart contends, the works of his last decade are a testament to a growing maturity in the
artist’s work.
While a partner at Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt, Stephen Smart amassed and curated one of the
finest corporate collections in Canada. In addition to curating, he has served as director on
the advisory board for art institutions, such as Visual Arts Ontario, Gershon Iskowitz
Foundation, Museum of Canadian Contemporary Art and the Doris McCarthy Gallery. He also
served as a member of the acquisition committee for the Art Gallery of Ontario.
Please RSVP as space is limited.
