CALGARY
4 OCTOBER to 30 NOVEMBER 2013
In honour of our inaugural season in Calgary, Barbara Edwards Contemporary is pleased to present a twin city solo exhibition of new works by iconic New York artist Eric Fischl.
Celebrated for his psychologically charged, often visceral figures, Fischl brings his mastery to bear in a variety of media including: sculpture, resin collage, watercolour and works on paper. His recent sculptural editions cast in bronze and glass reveal figures mid-gesture, involved in narratives rendered all the more poignant for their ambiguity. The glass works share a striking affinity to his watercolours in their fragile, fluid, quality. In his collages, Fischl plays with narrative space. Drawing from his vast vocabulary of figures, he arranges provocative scenarios with seemingly endless implications.
Eric Fischl has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions at major institutions including: the Art Gallery of Ontario; the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London; Kunsthalle Basel; Akademie der Bildenden Künstein, Vienna; Museum Haus Esters, Krefeld; and Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg. He represented the United States at the 41st Venice Biennial in 1984, and exhibited at Documenta 8 in 1987 and the Whitney Biennials in 1983, 1985, and 1991.
Born in New York City in 1948, Fischl attended the California Institute of the Arts where he earned his bachelor of fine arts degree in 1972. From 1974 to 1978 he taught painting at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design alongside leading conceptual artists of his generation. His recent and highly acclaimed memoir Bad Boy: My Life On and Off the Canvas is published by Crown Publishers.
The Eric Fischl lecture at Barbara Edwards Contemporary, Calgary is now available online! In this lecture, the artist discusses his recent watercolors and sculptures in glass and bronze with Canadian critic and editor of Border Crossings magazine, Robert Enright:
